Growling Tigresses prevail over Lady Archers

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses walloped the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers, 65-62, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

UST started at a disadvantage during the first half but managed a strong comeback on the second half to seal the match.

UST’s Jhenn Angeles secured their fifth win with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Bets Peñaflor added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

"We get the top two slots sa first round. I think yun yung pinakamaganda na mangyayari sa’min [...] to have the upper bracket, unlike last year na medyo nasa baba,” UST head coach Haydee Ong told reporters.

Charmaine Torres led the Lady Archers with game-high 17 points and five rebounds.

UST has now a 5-1 win-loss card at second place, while DLSU dropped to seventh with a 1-4 record.

UST’s next game will be against the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, while DLSU will try to redeem itself and face the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles, both on Oct. 4.
